Hey Houstonians! You should try to make it out to Discovery Green this Friday at 8PM for a free screening of Aurora Picture Show's Best of Extremely Shorts: Audience Choice. This screening features 23 short films and videos selected from 10 years of Aurora's annual Extremely Shorts festival. The lineup includes such gems as Monkey Vs. Robot, Wustenspringmaus (my favorite!), and Aurora Picture Show Intro created by the dynamic duo of Phipps/Chauvin! I honestly didn't even know we were voted in until after it happened and I'm flattered to be in such good company. Hope you can make it out there. If you bring the kids, bring their bathing suits and towels so they can splash around in the water park.

Remember: Discovery Green, This Friday at 8pm= FREE FUN!

I need your help! I entered my D.I.Y. Shrinky Dink video tutorial in a MindBites competition called Spread the Craft and I want to win, dammit! I worked really hard on the video, although you won't be able to tell when you watch it. Maybe if I win I'll buy a hot new video camera that'll actually expose properly (check out scene 2)!

You might watch another tutorial and decide that it's more worthy of your vote, but come on! It's me. In video form. Acting goofy. Vote for me! You'll need to register to vote, which is a pain in the butt, I know, but if I win this thing, I'll be happy, and when I'm happy I blog/craft/smile more, so don't come back here until after you've voted. You can vote once a day, so go for it! Mommy needs a new pair of Danskos!

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for children's drawings and now that I have the privilege of witnessing my own spawn's drawing style evolve and get more and more interesting, I'm one happy momma. Artist Yeondoo Jung (spotted via craft) recreates children's drawings through photography and the results are as cute and kooky as the originals.

Oh my. I apologize for taking down the d.i.y. shrinky dink tutorial, but I just got a message from the web hosting peeps that due to the increased traffic on my site, I was fast approaching my bandwidth limit and they were going to start charging extra or the other option would be to pay $70 and bump up my limit a smidge for the year. Don't fret, I'll put it back up once the fervor has died a bit. It's nice to have fervor. Fervor is good, but I want free fervor.

Unrelated PSA: Those in the Austin area, do yourself a favor and head over to the grand opening of Domy Austin today! Russell has worked extra-hard to bring you this amazing place, so go check it out. It's pretty exciting stuff. Remember, books are sexy.

I was watering the plants in my front garden tonight and this song got stuck in my head. Enjoy!

Howdy kittens! I'm just a week away from my summer break. I love my students, I honestly do, but I need a serious break from teenagers for a while.

I think I'm going to try my hand at making clothes this summer. I hand-sew all the time, but I've been avoiding digging out the old sewing machine because of a bad experience I had in Home Ec in Junior High. Junior-frickin-High! I need to get over it already, you think? The combination of watching several seasons of Project Runway and having a hard time finding what I like in clothing stores, plus an overwhelming desire to see if I can do this without screwing it up has led me to my summer goal- at least one good garment that I'm proud of and will actually wear outside the house. I'm going to start simple- an unlined shift dress. If I can pull that off, then I'll try something more complicated. That was one of the issues I had with that junior high Home Ec class- the blouse I attempted to make on my first try at machine sewing had so many finicky and bizarre little things going on (Ruffles! Why did I choose a shirt with 5000 ruffles?) that I got frustrated and vowed never again. Time to get over it.

On another crafty note, this past weekend I experimented with shrink plastic and put the instructions on Poopscape Projects. Go and have a look!

Here's a newsflash people: When I go for weeks without posting, it's not as if I've forgotten about you or hate you or hate myself or that I don't have anything interesting to say. I've just been in Mode B. Mode B is my observation/information collection mode. Mode A is production mode. Mode A could not exist if it weren't for Mode B.

This last stint in Mode B has been troublesome- I went through a rather whiney, "why bother" phase at one point, but I think I've pulled myself out of that one. Now I'm merging in to Mode A and I'm having difficulty focusing on one thing and getting it right and instead I'll try to do too many things at once. Here's just a short list of stuff in the works.

My garden- It's...coming along...slowly. Right now we're considering also reworking our perfectly okay front yard because it gets plenty of sunlight while our backgarden is mainly shade. We want to make our own version of a Victory Garden. Oh, and did I tell you about the chickens? Yup. I want chickens in the backyard.
My photography- I made some images that I'm totally crazy about but they're a bit difficult and I'm not sure if I should show anyone or if they should just remain between a mother and her rather accomodating daughter.
My new lesson plans for my new digital photo class- The school hasn't unlocked the cameras on the new computers yet (long story) so my students are scanning objects and found photographs and I'm teaching them how to composite in Photoshop. Pretty fun, actually.
My crafty stuff- Nothing. Oh, I'm sad about this like you wouldn't believe. I've been trying to come up with something smart and fun for Maker Faire Austin in October but I'm at a total loss. I really hope I can pull something out of my ass during my summer vacation otherwise I'll be pouting come October.

About Me

I'm a mom and wifey living in Houston and I teach art and photography at a high school in a small rural town just south of here. In my spare time I thrift, I craft and I spend way too much time looking at flickr and design blogs. Wanna talk to me? Email me at claireATpoopscapeDOTcom.
